What Is Double Cleansing? The Korean Skincare Method Explained

If you wear makeup or sunscreen, is one face wash really enough?

For me, a single cleanse has never felt quite enough to remove everything properly—especially after a full day of SPF, makeup and daily buildup. But that doesn’t mean we should scrub harder or wash until our skin feels tight.

The secret is using two different cleansers, each with a different job.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step evening cleansing method commonly associated with Korean skincare.

Step one: An oil cleanser, cleansing balm or cleansing pad dissolves makeup, sunscreen, excess sebum and oil-based buildup.

Step two: A water-based cleanser—such as a gel, foam, milky or powder cleanser—removes sweat, dirt and any remaining residue.

Think of your first cleanser as removing everything sitting on your skin, while your second cleanser cleans the skin itself.

Cleansing oil versus cleansing balm

Cleansing oils and balms perform the same basic job, so the choice usually comes down to texture and personal preference.

A cleansing oil is fluid, lightweight and easy to spread. It works beautifully for everyday SPF, makeup and excess sebum.

A cleansing balm begins as a solid or buttery texture and melts into an oil as you massage it into the skin. It can feel especially comforting when removing heavier or waterproof makeup.

Neither is automatically better for oily, dry or acne-prone skin. The formula—and how well it emulsifies and rinses away—matters more.

Apply your oil or balm to dry hands and a dry face. Massage gently, add a little lukewarm water until it turns milky, and then rinse thoroughly.

What is a water-based cleanser?

“Water-based cleanser” is simply another name for the second cleanser you would ordinarily recognize as your face wash.

It could be a:

This is the step that should be selected most carefully according to your skin type and concerns.

What is a powder cleanser?

Powder cleansers are a newer and slightly different way to cleanse. The dry powder is mixed with water in your hands, transforming into a soft foam before being applied to the face.

Many powder cleansers contain rice powder or enzymes that cleanse while gently loosening dead skin cells. This can make them particularly useful for dullness, rough texture and congested-looking skin.

The Anua Rice Enzyme Brightening Cleansing Powder is a lovely option for brightening and smoothing, while the NEEDLY Mild Enzyme Cleansing Powder provides gentler enzyme exfoliation for sensitive, dull or textured skin.

A powder cleanser can be used as your second cleansing step after an oil or balm. Because it also provides light exfoliation, begin by using it two or three times per week—especially if your routine already contains acids, exfoliating pads or retinoids.

Always mix the powder with water and create a foam in your hands before applying it. Avoid rubbing the dry powder directly onto your face.

What about cleansing pads?

Cleansing pads are soft, pre-soaked pads designed to remove makeup, sunscreen and daily buildup without needing a separate bottle of cleanser.

The NEEDLY Mild Cleansing Pads are a convenient alternative first step when travelling, after the gym or whenever you need a quick cleanse. Gently wipe the pad over dry skin, then follow with your usual gel, foam, milky or powder cleanser.

They can be used alone for a quick refresh, but I would still follow with a second cleanser when removing heavier makeup or water-resistant sunscreen.

Who should double cleanse?

Double cleansing is particularly helpful if you wear:

  • Makeup, foundation or BB cream
  • Tinted or water-resistant sunscreen
  • Waterproof eye makeup
  • Several layers of reapplied SPF
  • Long-wear complexion products

It may also help if you have particularly oily or congested skin, have been sweating, or have spent the day around dust, pollution or outdoor environments.

However, it isn’t compulsory for absolutely everyone. If you wear no makeup and a lightweight, non-water-resistant sunscreen, one thorough cleanse may be enough—as long as it removes everything comfortably.

Double cleansing is generally only needed in the evening. In the morning, one gentle cleanse—or simply a lukewarm-water rinse for very dry or sensitive skin—is usually enough.

The Best Korean Double-Cleansing Pair for Your Skin

Your cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean, soft and comfortable—not tight, dry or squeaky.

If you’re unsure where you fit:

  • Dry or dehydrated skin: start with Hydrate
  • Sensitive or barrier-stressed skin: start with Repair & Soothe
  • Oily, congested or acne-prone skin: start with Clear & Balance

Hydrate

Best for: Dry, dehydrated or tight-feeling skin.

Step one: Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil

This lightweight oil dissolves makeup, sunscreen and impurities without requiring excessive rubbing. Soybean and ginseng seed oils give it a comfortable, nourishing feel without turning cleansing into a heavy or greasy experience.

Step two: Anua 8 Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Gentle Gel Cleanser

A gentle gel cleanser formulated with glycerin, squalane, ceramide, ectoin and multiple forms of hyaluronic acid. It cleanses without leaving already-dehydrated skin feeling stripped.

Why this pair: Together, they remove the day’s buildup while helping dry skin stay soft, comfortable and hydrated.

Repair & Soothe

Best for: Sensitive, irritated or barrier-stressed skin.

Step one: Haruharu Wonder Centella Sunflower Makeup-Melting Cleansing Balm

A gentle, comforting balm that melts away makeup and sunscreen while centella and sunflower-derived ingredients support a calm cleansing experience.

Step two: SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Gentle Cleansing Milk

This low-pH cleansing milk combines centella, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and panthenol. Its creamy texture is ideal for skin that becomes tight or uncomfortable after ordinary foaming cleansers.

Why this pair: Both steps prioritize comfort, hydration and minimal friction—exactly what sensitive or compromised skin needs.

If your barrier is very irritated, you may not need both steps every evening. Use only as much cleansing as necessary to remove what you are wearing.

Brighten & Even

Best for: Dullness, uneven-looking skin and pigmentation-focused routines.

Step one: Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Deep Cleansing Oil

A lightweight, fragrance-free oil cleanser that removes makeup and SPF while black rice bran and plant-derived oils leave the skin feeling nourished rather than stripped.

Step two: SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Cleansing Gel Foam

This moisturizing gel-to-foam cleanser contains centella, niacinamide, a vitamin C derivative and gentle fruit-derived exfoliating ingredients to help lift dull surface buildup.

Why this pair: It gently removes the layers that can leave skin looking dull and prepares it for your pigmentation serum or brightening treatment.

Remember that pigmentation cannot be treated by cleanser alone. Your leave-on serum and daily SPF remain the most important targeted steps.

Clear & Balance

Best for: Oily, congested, blackhead-prone or acne-prone skin.

Step one: Medicube Zero Pore Blackhead Deep Cleansing Oil

Formulated with a lightweight blend of plant-derived oils, it helps dissolve makeup, sunscreen, excess sebum and pore-clogging buildup.

Step two: SKIN1004 Tea-Trica BHA Foam

This targeted foam cleanser combines BHA with tea tree and centella to help remove excess oil, loosen dead skin buildup and support clearer-looking pores.

Why this pair: The first step dissolves oily buildup, while the second provides more targeted cleansing for congestion and breakouts.

If you already use exfoliating pads, acid treatments or a retinoid, begin with the BHA cleanser on alternate evenings. More exfoliation is not always better.

Firm & Smooth

Best for: Rough texture, loss of bounce and a firming-focused routine.

Step one: VT Cosmetics PDRN Grinding Cleansing Balm

This sorbet-like balm melts makeup and sunscreen while PHA and LHA gently refine surface texture. Panthenol, squalane and ceramide help prevent the skin from feeling stripped.

Step two: VT Cosmetics PDRN Barrier Cleanser

A soft foaming cleanser formulated with PDRN, cica, panthenol and hyaluronic acid to leave the skin feeling clean, hydrated and supported.

Why this pair: The balm focuses on smoother-looking texture while the second cleanse supports hydration and the moisture barrier.

A cleanser can prepare and smooth the skin, but your leave-on peptides, retinoids, PDRN and firming treatments will deliver the more meaningful long-term results.

Glow & Radiance

Best for: Dull, tired-looking skin in need of a fresh, luminous finish.

Step one: mixsoon Bean Cleansing Oil

This lightweight cleansing oil uses soybean, jojoba and sunflower seed oils to dissolve waterproof makeup, SPF and impurities without stripping away essential moisture.

Step two: Anua Peach Niacin Spread Cleansing Foam

A creamy cleanser containing peach extract, niacinamide, glycerin and panthenol to cleanse away dull buildup while leaving the skin soft and refreshed.

Why this pair: It provides a thorough but comfortable cleanse and creates a fresh canvas for the hydrating and glow-enhancing products that follow.

Still unsure which double-cleansing pair to choose?

The SKIN1004 Double Cleansing Duo is the perfect place to start.

It combines the lightweight Centella Cleansing Oil for removing makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum with the gentle Centella Ampoule Foam for cleansing away any remaining impurities.

This balanced, soothing combination works well for most skin types and takes the guesswork out of choosing your first double-cleansing routine.

What about cleanser pH?

Healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic. Very alkaline soaps and harsh cleansers can disrupt this environment and leave the skin feeling dry, tight or irritated.

A gentle, skin-friendly or low-pH cleanser is often a good choice, particularly for dry, sensitive, acne-prone or barrier-stressed skin.

It’s also worth clarifying that pH and active ingredients are not the same thing. A cleanser may be pH-balanced while also containing ingredients aimed at hydration, soothing, brightening or congestion.

Can active cleansers really treat your skin?

Modern cleansers can contain ingredients such as:

  • Hyaluronic acid for hydration
  • Centella and panthenol for soothing
  • Ceramides for barrier support
  • BHA for congestion
  • Niacinamide and vitamin C derivatives for radiance
  • PDRN for skin-supporting care
  • PHA, LHA or fruit enzymes for gentle exfoliation

These ingredients can support your routine, but cleansers are still rinse-off products that remain on your face briefly.

Choose your cleanser first according to how effectively and comfortably it cleans. Consider the targeted ingredients a useful bonus, while allowing your leave-on toners, serums and creams to do most of the treatment work.

How to double cleanse without damaging your skin barrier

Double cleansing itself is not automatically damaging. Problems usually arise when the cleansers are too harsh, the skin is scrubbed aggressively or too many exfoliating ingredients are used in the same routine.

Keep your cleanse gentle:

  • Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.
  • Massage with your fingertips instead of scrubbing brushes or rough cloths.
  • Give your oil or balm time to dissolve makeup instead of rubbing harder.
  • Emulsify your oil cleanser properly before rinsing.
  • Avoid following an active cleanser with several other exfoliating products.
  • Pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel instead of rubbing.
  • Change face towels regularly rather than repeatedly using one that has remained damp.

Makeup wipes can be useful in an emergency or while travelling, but they shouldn’t replace a proper cleanse. They often require more rubbing and may leave makeup, sunscreen and residue behind.

If your skin begins to feel tight, sting, flake or suddenly become more sensitive, simplify your routine and switch to gentler cleansers. Clean skin should feel comfortable—not stripped.

The Meadow verdict

Double cleansing isn’t about washing your face more aggressively. It’s simply about giving two different cleansers two different jobs.

Your first cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen and oil-based buildup. Your second cleanser cleans the skin and can be chosen according to your skin type and concerns.

Finding the right pair can make such a difference to how your skin feels—and how the rest of your routine performs.

If you’re still unsure which combination would suit your skin, you’re always welcome to message me. I’m happy to help you find your perfect pair.
