What Is PDRN? Everything You Need to Know About Korean Skincare’s Favourite Ingredient
Share

If you’ve spent even five minutes on TikTok or Instagram lately, you’ve probably heard everyone talking about PDRN.
When I first heard about it, my reaction was honestly, “Okay… I need that!” But if I’m being completely honest, I had absolutely no idea what it was or why I supposedly needed it. I just knew it was everywhere and everyone seemed to be obsessed.
Then someone mentioned salmon DNA, and I thought… Wait, what?!
So let’s clear that up.
Originally, PDRN used in skincare was derived from purified salmon DNA. That’s where all the internet rumours come from! But skincare technology has come a long way, and today there are also innovative plant-based and vegan alternatives that offer similar skin-supporting benefits.
Pretty amazing, right?
So now that we know where it comes from…
What does PDRN actually do?
This was probably the biggest thing I learnt while researching Korean skincare.
PDRN isn’t just another anti-ageing ingredient.
It’s actually a skin-repairing ingredient.
That means instead of simply targeting wrinkles, it focuses on improving the overall health of your skin.
Healthy skin holds hydration better.
Healthy skin has a stronger skin barrier.
Healthy skin is calmer, smoother and more resilient.
And when your skin is healthier, something amazing happens…
Fine lines become less noticeable.
Skin looks plumper.
Redness settles.
Your complexion starts to glow.
So yes—wrinkles absolutely love PDRN—but not because it’s aggressively attacking them. It’s because PDRN is helping your skin become healthier from within.
I often explain it like this…
Imagine trying to paint a beautiful picture on a cracked wall.
You could use the best paint in the world, but the wall still needs repairing first.
Your skin is exactly the same.
PDRN helps repair that “wall”, creating the healthiest possible foundation so all of your other skincare ingredients can perform at their very best.
That’s one of the reasons I love it so much.
Is PDRN an active ingredient?
Not in the same way as ingredients like retinol or exfoliating acids.
PDRN is generally considered a skin-supporting and repairing ingredient, which means it’s well tolerated by most skin types and fits beautifully into almost any skincare routine.
It’s also not an overnight miracle.
Think of it as a long-term investment in healthier skin. The longer you consistently support your skin, the better the results you’ll usually see.
Can you use PDRN with other skincare ingredients?
Absolutely.
One of my favourite things about PDRN is how well it works alongside other ingredients.
It pairs beautifully with:
✔ Vitamin C
✔ Retinol
✔ Niacinamide
✔ Hyaluronic Acid
✔ Centella Asiatica
Who is PDRN good for?
Honestly…
Almost everyone.
I particularly love recommending it if you have:
- Dehydrated skin
- Sensitive skin
- Mature skin
- A damaged skin barrier
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Fine lines
- Skin recovering after breakouts
It’s one of those ingredients that focuses on creating healthier skin rather than simply targeting one specific concern.

My Final Thoughts
PDRN has quickly become one of my favourite ingredients in Korean skincare—not because it’s trendy, but because I genuinely love what it does for the skin.
It’s not about chasing a quick fix.
It’s about supporting healthier, stronger and more resilient skin over time.
For me, PDRN isn’t about looking younger overnight. It’s about creating healthier skin from within, so your skin can look and perform at its very best.
And in my opinion…
Healthy skin will always be the most beautiful skin.
